The Color of Lifesavers                                    After Richard Chandler*

I.

I was distracted
by the green dome
blue door
golden alcove
purple skies
the deeper study
of body & soul
in long color collage

By clouds of moss laurel
artichoke & tea
by swaths of razzmic berry & wisteria
by the bell tower
jasmine blond & olive ochre
& the dome again
still azure celeste & electric blue

Only the house
with cinnabar
walls & slate
blue windows
looks weighed down
by its Kharahafu roof
& secret prison
in the basement

II.

The summer sun’s
so bright
I can barely make you out
on the balcony of
the white gabled building

But when I see you again
in the park
with the portal
bandstand &
human game of chess
I’ll pretend
you’re someone else

A man in a mock
black turtleneck

Later
I’ll find you
at the beach
attach the sail
to the mast you cut
from a fallen tree

At sea
everything rises up
light darts over waves
like a hummingbird
feeding on monkeyflowers
bottlebrush & sage

You who dreamt me
sail us to shore
lined with flags
of tangerine
& lime
